I’ve taken a stand against blood cancer.

All funds going to the leukaemia foundation! Read below for more info about one of our incredible members Jess, the main reason we have decided to support this foundation.
"In 2008 at the age of 23, my life took an unexpected and life-changing turn. I was diagnosed with a rare type of leukaemia, known as Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia or CML. CML is a type of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow. In CML the bone marrow produces too many white cells which gradually crowd the bone marrow, interfering with normal blood cell production. I had been experiencing extreme fatigue, some unusual bruising on my body and getting colds frequently in the months leading up to my diagnosis.
9 months out from getting married, I was devastated with this news. Fortunately for me, only 5 years earlier had a new type of target chemotherapy drug been developed called Glivec. This drug has changed the course of my disease greatly, giving hope and a brighter future to sufferers. Previously this disease had a 5 year survival rate of only 30%. Because of Glivec and other newer similar drugs that have been developed since, the 5-10 year survival rate has jumped to 90%. I have taken this drug every day for 11 years and need to continue treatment to keep going - unfortunately there is no cure for this disease.
My hope is that more treatments can become available which may provide a cure in the future, or more alternative drugs could be available as the efficacy of the drugs don’t always work, or may not work long term for some patients. I also hope that there can be more effective treatments for the more aggressive types of blood cancer which sadly affect children in particular.
The Leukaemia Foundation is a national organisation which supports the 110,000 Australians currently living with blood cancer, which includes leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
They are heavily involved in scientific research to deliver advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of blood cancer, also giving Australians treatments to global clinical trials.
Their big goal is to make sure zero lives are lost to blood cancer by 2035.
I am very grateful to you for reading my story and supporting this wonderful organisation through this generous fundraiser at UTB. Just remember, there is always hope for a brighter future.
