Tamara Gray: Race Against Leukemia

My story

On the 12th of May 2025 I was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.  What I thought was a normal gastro bug turned out to be my worst nightmare - cancer.

I had plans, I had goals, I was going places - then my world stopped. Life was full of hospital, chemo, medications, medical complications, and a whole lot of learning about a cancer I’d never heard of.

After it all I consider myself to be one of the lucky ones! I have the NPM1 and FLT3TKD mutations, giving me a better chance of survival than others. I also went straight in to remission and still remain there 6 months post chemo finishing. I haven’t needed a bone marrow transplant. I. Got. Lucky.

I’m still on a maintenance therapy and will have regular blood tests every 6 weeks for the next couple of years while I sit in the window of relapse.

I believe the mind has control over the body. I believe in every neurological pathway that I’m not relapsing. I’m doing everything I can, to not relapse. Hell, I’m just not relapsing - period.

The Leukemia Foundation were a great support to me. I valued most the phone calls where they simply called to check on me and would listen to what was happening to me at the time and be able to provide some of the best advice. The staff are so experienced in navigating blood cancer and hospitals and treatment they are an asset.

I set the loft goal of finishing Finke. My body is different than before cancer and fatigue is a real thing for me, so is a compromised immune system. Despite all this, I was to raise funds for the foundation and provide hope to others fighting AML.

I really struggled seeing others with AML around me loosing their battle. I didn’t see anyone survive it - it was heart breaking and tough to see how I was ever going to make it. I want others battling AML to see that I survived it and that they can keep fighting to survive it too AND go on to do incredible things.

I’ve taken a stand against blood cancer.

I wanted to beat blood cancer because I knew my fight wasn’t just my own. Acute myeloid leukemia tested me in every way—physically, mentally, and emotionally—but I refused to let it be the end of my story. I fought for my future, for the people I love, and for every person facing the same diagnosis. Survival gave me a second chance, and with that comes a responsibility to give back and stand beside those still in the fight.

That’s why I’m raising funds for the Leukaemia Foundation. They provide life-changing support to patients and families during their darkest moments—offering accommodation, education, emotional support, and funding vital research that brings us closer to better treatments and cures.

Donating means giving someone hope. It means helping families feel less alone. It means being part of a future where more people survive blood cancer.

I am living proof that survival is possible. With your support, we can help more people get that same second chance.
